Internal Medicine

Even if you’ve heard of internal medicine before, you might not have a clear understanding of the definition. You’re certainly not alone. It’s a relatively vague term, so we asked an expert to help provide a simple answer.

Internal medicine, or general medicine, is the medical specialty that manages the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of adult diseases. Physicians specializing in internal medicine are called internists and provide specific treatment plans for individuals and families, while often creating care plans for peri- and post-operative patients. Many patients choose internal medicine doctors as their primary care physicians for annual physicals, wellness visits and screenings, due to their broad medical expertise.
